Before I talk about how it feels to play, it’s worth noting that Pocket Bravery is an indie, 2D, fighting game developed by Brazilian developer Statera Studio and published by PixelHeart and PQube. It was originally released digitally in August 2023 on Steam via the digital store, which already says a lot about its roots.

The project was spearheaded by Jonathan “Jon Satella” Ferreira, with Anderson Halfeld as creative director, and that leadership shows in the polish. Later, ports for consoles arrived in April 2025, expanding its reach beyond PC and giving more players a chance to experience it.

Story – A World Shaped by a Strange Force

The game drops you into a world shaken by a strange phenomenon that only a few people can manifest. They can throw energy from their hands and even reinforce muscles in ways that defy logic. As someone who has played many indie fighters, I could immediately feel that this idea gave the story a bold edge.

What makes it gripping is that even specialists who study these powers cannot fully explain how users transfer essence into objects or weapons. Nobody understands what is truly happening, and that lingering mystery kept me curious through every character route. I kept pushing forward just to discover one more hidden layer.

At the heart of the plot is The Pack, a feared criminal organization trying to steal powerful ancient artifacts and rare relics. Their actions affect several nations, pulling in notable individuals who each have personal stakes in the conflict. Instead of telling everything at once, the game places you right in the middle of chaos, letting the tension build naturally.

    Game Modes

What stood out to me first was how Points I accumulated in single player modes could be spent in the Shop to purchase extra character colors, stages, and gallery artworks, or even unlock hidden characters and the special Rainbow Edition and Hot Pursuit options in Pocket Bravery. This loop gave the game real purpose beyond just winning fights.

At its core, Pocket Bravery respects the traditional Arcade Games, Versus, and Online setup, but it also features Training, Tutorial, and Combo Factory tools for serious practice. The chapter-based Story and Additional challenges like Survival, Time Attack, and Trials make these modes feel complete for any player.

    Initial Roster

I first tried Pocket Bravery with Mingmei, Wong from Beijing, China, and her style instantly felt sharp and controlled. Then I explored Nuno, Alves of Porto, City, Portugal, and the contrast in movement showed how carefully Pocket Bravery builds identity through its fighters.

Switching to Kimberly, Moore from New York, USA, and Aleksander, Arshavin of Oymyakon, Environs, Siberia, I felt the global range the roster offers. From Malika Sharma in Udaipur, India, to Ekon Ndidi from a Village Nigeria, every match in Pocket Bravery feels culturally distinct.

I also enjoyed testing Sebastian, McClane of Glasgow, Scotland, alongside Hadassa, Silva from Park, Lage, Brazil. Rounding it out with Daisuke, Sato on Desert, Street, Japan, and Ximena, Guadalupe from Gloomy, Street, Mexico, Pocket Bravery proves its starting lineup is anything but basic.

    Development

Pocket Bravery was first announced in 2020, but its roots go deeper. The project was born from discontent after Jonathan Ferreira, who founded Statera Studio, made his departure from Onanim Studio.

He had been working there since 2016, and Onanim’s project, Trajes Fatais, suffered from financial troubles, layoffs, and a general lack of transparency. As someone who has followed indie fighters closely, I could feel that this new game carried personal weight.

    A Shift in Direction

The game was initially intended to utilize a 2D sprite style, similar to SNK’s The King of Fighters XIII. That sounded bold, but it quickly became unfeasible for a small team with limited time.

So they scaled back the main feature and embraced an SD pocket-style game approach. This change felt smart, especially since it stayed in line with classic SNK fighting games and the charm of Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Style, Betas, and the Road to Launch

The final visual style also reminded me of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, which gave it a bright, arcade feel. The first beta was launched on Steam in April 2021, and I remember testing it and seeing real promise.

An Indiegogo campaign to fund the game followed in May 2021, showing how much community support mattered. By August 2023, an open beta on another platform helped polish the experience before it finally launched at the end of the month.

Overview – A Fresh Spin on Classic Combat

When I first started Pocket Bravery, I could feel the heavy inspiration from arcade fighters of the 90’s. It clearly respects legends like Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, and The King of Fighters, yet it still feels modern.

This 2D fighting game is fully sprite-based and utilizes a charming SD art style. It even reminds me of the Neo Geo Pocket Color, which gave me a strong wave of nostalgia the moment I saw the characters on screen.

The gameplay feels tight and honest, something I value in competitive fighting games. It plays smoothly, and I noticed that timing matters more than flashy movement.

It uses a four-button configuration built around two strength levels for punches and kicks. With smart directional inputs and the right buttons, you can execute clean combinations and satisfying special moves.

In addition, there’s a smart addition to the system: a power meter that fills as players take damage. This creates tension because you gain access to hyper moves right when the pressure is highest.

Each of the characters has a defined element, and that connects to the elemental meter. It automatically accumulates up to a maximum of two stocks, allowing the player to use stronger versions of their chosen character’s attacks at the perfect moment.
